Mining services and cane country
Mackay is a regional city built on three things: sugar, coal and the services that supply them. Paget is the main industrial estate, packed with engineering shops, equipment suppliers, fabricators and mining-service contractors. Mackay Harbour handles port and bulk activity. Walkerston, Mount Pleasant and Sarina serve the cane districts, and Ooralea and Andergrove carry retail and trade. The CBD and Slade Point have hospitality, offices and beachfront businesses.
Sites here often hold expensive equipment, parts and fuel, and many are open in the daytime to a stream of contractors. A yard that is full of people at 5am can be empty and dark by 6pm.
Setting up for shift patterns
The AI layer lets you set alert hours to match real quiet windows. For a mining-services business, that may be a mid-week night, a full weekend or the shutdown period between jobs. A nominated person receives an email with the frame whenever the system detects a person in those hours, and a timeline of clips lets you check what happened.
Common set-ups include:
- Gate, fuel and parts-store coverage for workshops and engineering yards, with line crossing at the gate. See zones and tripwires.
- Stock and parts cages, where stock movement checks cross-reference movement with records.
- Machinery and cane-equipment yards, as in farms and rural.
- Secure compounds, per secure areas.
Who installs
Mackay is outside South East Queensland, so a local installer handles cabling and mounting while we set up, connect and support the AI layer. Footage stays on your recorder. Our installation page explains how the split works.
Cyclone coast, heat and humidity
Mackay sits on a cyclone-prone coast. Wind loads on poles and building edges are high, so mounts need to be strong and fixings proper. Heavy wet-season rain tests every seal. Humidity, heat and sun are constant, and cheap cameras fail early.
Lightning is a significant risk in the tropics, so surge protection on power and data cabling should be standard. Power can drop during storms. A recorder with backup power and a mobile backup link keeps cameras recording and alerts flowing.
Cane country brings dust and the occasional haze at harvest time, and grime builds up on lenses, so a regular clean pays off. Sites on the Paget estate face large exposed yards, which means long cable runs and sometimes a weak signal at the back fence.
Queensland has, for example, the Invasion of Privacy Act 1971. This is general information, not legal advice, so check current legislation for your own situation. Staff notice and signage are sensible, and cameras stay out of toilets and change rooms.
